Mei

They arrived at the Community Arts Center a few minutes later. A cool wind sent tendrils of Mei’s hair skimming across her neck as she crossed the parking lot.

“Smells like snow,” Addison remarked as they headed to the oak double doors.

“Heaven forbid,” Helen said. “Can you imagine if we were all snowed in?”

Visions of cuddling with Hector as snowflakes drifted past the windows filled Mei’s head. She tried hard to think about something else.

A wave of warm air hit them as they entered the building.

The Arts Center was usually decorated with pottery, oil paintings and mobiles made by local artists. Today all those things were still there, as well as the fairy lights and streamers Addison and the party decor group had put up.

Their heels clicked on the pumpkin colored pine floors as they strode into the main hall. Display tables lined the walls surrounding the dining area and the dance floor. A small stage at the back of the room had a microphone set up.

Helen had decided to arrive fashionably late to her own charity ball. As a result, the room was already packed with familiar faces. When their fearless leader swept into the room there were many awed noises and even a smattering of applause.

“Heavens,” Helen said, smiling and waving to her admirers. “Now, you girls remember our plan, right?”

“Yes, of course,” Mei assured her. “We’re on the job.”

Helen had devised a scheme as a sort of back-up plan. If no one ponied up for a night with her, she wanted the girls to bid on her anonymously. Helen would let them know when to make their move by raising an eyebrow and giving them a special look.

Mei was pretty sure that someone would bid on Dr. Thayer. She was an amazing woman - so smart, so generous, so vivacious. Any man alive would be lucky to have her by his side.

She had said so, but Helen only rolled her eyes and told Mei most men alive wanted someone younger and thinner.

“Men don’t know what they want,” Addison had said dismissively. “It’s up to us to tell them.”

“I like that,” Helen had said.

But it hadn’t done anything to boost her confidence.

So Mei and Addison were logging into the app Helen had installed on their phones so that they could take part in the bidding, if need be.

When Mei could clearly see each item and potential date available for bid on her phone she slid it back into her clutch and looked around.

Bianca and Ian were already on the dance floor. He swept her around like the princess in a fairy tale. The two looked incredible together, their happiness overflowing.

“Whoa,” Addison said.

Mei turned to see what had surprised her friend.

Dear, sweet, god…

Hector stood in the threshold of the ballroom. He wore a crisp white shirt and bowtie with a jet-black tux that brought out his dark hair and eyes.

He scanned the ballroom like a predator seeking his prey.

Meanwhile, a sort of hush fell over the back of the room as more people spotted him.
